Information on application and admission

Criteria for admission

The application form is available from the Administration Office. Information on the admission, including the admission exam, is also available from the above office. Applicants from the Transdanubian (Dunántúli) Diocese of the Reformed Church of Hungary are especially encouraged but others – including applicants from abroad – are also welcome.

(Reformed) Degree in Theology (MA): 28th February 2023

Degree of Teacher of Christian faith (BA): 28th February 2023

Teacher of Christian Faith and Ethics (Short-cycle tertiary education): 18th August 2023

Pastoral Care and Counselling (Short-cycle tertiary education): 18th August 2023

Principles and Practice of Preaching (Short-cycle tertiary education): 18th August 2023

Degrees on offer

(Reformed) Degree in Theology (MA, 12 semesters)

The course is available to those who wish to become ministers in the Reformed Church of Hungary. It requires the completion of a 12 semester undivided MA degree. During the course the candidate will be prepared for the tasks of conducting church services and the proclamation of the word of God, counselling and development of parish life.

(Reformed) Degree in Theology (MA, 10 semesters)

During the 10 semesters the Seminary is involved in training theologians for the Reformed Church of Hungary at the highest possible standard. Upon the completion of the uniform, undivided course the graduate students will not be permitted to function as ministers of the Church.

Degree of Teacher of Christian faith (BA, 6 semesters)

The degree is offered to those who are committed to the Reformed Church and are called to teach the principals of Christian faith in primary schools for students in grades 1-8 and to conduct Sunday school services in parishes.

Teacher of Christian Faith and Ethics (Short-cycle tertiary education, 4 semesters)

The course is offered to those who are committed to the Reformed Church and are called to teach the principals of Christian faith and ethics in primary schools for students in grades 1-8 and to conduct Sunday school services in parishes.

Pastoral Care and Counselling (Short-cycle tertiary education, 4 semesters)

The course is available to those who already have a (Reformed) Degree in Theology (MA 12 semesters or equivalent) and wish to further their knowledge and competencies in pastoral care and counselling.

Principles and Practice of Preaching (Short-cycle tertiary education, 2 semesters)

The course is available to those who already have a (Reformed) Degree in Theology (MA or equivalent) and wish to further their knowledge and competencies in the theory and practice of preaching.

At the admission exam for the (Reformed) Degree in Theology (12 and 10 semesters) the candidate must demonstrate his or her knowledge of and commitment to the Scriptures and the confessions of the Reformed Church, his or her vocation to become a minister or theologian and an ability for communication.

At the admission exam for the Degree of Teacher of Christian Faith (BA) the applicants are interviewed about their commitment to the Scriptures and confessions of the Reformed Church and their vocation to become religious educators.

The admission process for the short-cycle degrees (Teacher of Christian Faith and Ethics; Pastoral Care and Counselling; Principles and Practice of Preaching) consists of a short interview with the applicant about the curriculum of the course.

At the time of submitting the application form the applicants must pay an admission fee which covers the cost of accommodation and meals. For the current fees please contact the Administration Office.

Applicants must submit the following original documents or their certified copies:

  • birth certificate,
  • grade card from grade 11 (2. semester) and grade 12 (2. semester),
  • leaving/matriculation certificate only for those who apply for BA and MA degrees (in the case of a leaving certificate obtained outside of Hungary, it is sufficient to translate and certify its copy),
  • detailed, handwritten Curriculum Vitae (1,5-2 pages),
  • recommendation from the minister of the residency of the applicant; applicants graduating from high schools maintained by the Church must also provide a recommendation from the teacher of Christian faith of the school,
  • in the case of those who apply for MA degree and are not from the Transdanubian Diocese, the recommendation of the bishop of the sending diocese is also necessary,
  • certificate of confirmation (older than 2 years for those who apply for MA degree),
  • certificate of good conduct, less than 3 months old (only if the school leaving certificate was issued prior to the year of the application),
  • copy of language certificate (if available),
  • copy of previous degrees (compulsory for those applying for short-cycle degrees),
  • declaration and certification about medical conditions that would exclude the applicant from applying for BA and MA degrees.
